"Blue Norther" by The Bordersnakes (Rock/Country Artist from Los Angeles, California (CA))

"Blue Norther" by The Bordersnakes is alternative/Americana album with a sound compiled from several influences. The basis is country, but throw in some blues and a blue collar rock element and there is a formula that equals high energy and a definite sing along ability. The arrangements are diverse and the performances are fantastic. Listeners will also appreciate the amount of passion behind the well-delivered, well-harmonized vocals. Overall, the band's sound is very complete and the song-writing ability is not to be ignored. The album sounds great, with evident care taken in heightening the experience by making every element of the sound represented. A highlight is the opener "State Road 7." There is and undeniable Springsteen element here, as this track has a raw power to it and a great piano line, and tears off the roof with a vibrant horn section. "Blue in the Face" features some great variation in the vocal performance, tons of energy, and clever lyrics. "Shadow On the Wall" has some beautiful harmony in the vocals and is hypnotic and mellow. For listeners that enjoy classic American rock, be sure to check out The Bordersnakes' "Blue Norther."

"Living Here" by J.P. Ranger (Rock/Soul Artist from New York City, New York (NY))

Inspired by generations of power house rock and a touch of blues, J. P. Ranger's newest CD "Living Here" is a compilation of artistic style and flair. Vocals are strong with an attitude of sometimes edgy and emotional appeal. The harmonies are sung in a higher register and are perfectly blended as heard on "Mr. Singer" and "America." The relationship between the musicians of this group is noticeably well connected. "Burning Up" gives an example of this great musicianship with a powerful rock guitar solo and tight, solid drum beats. Ranger's lyrics throughout this album are written from the heart and sung with the same conviction. You'll notice a nice change of musical style with a touch of the Blues on the ballad "Blue Moon Dreamer." The entire CD possesses a high quality of production as each song is well balanced between vocals and instruments. Day is backed by a tremendously talented cast of musicians, providing both wonderful solos and support throughout. The album opens with a spirited rendition of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol's "Caravan," which features scat singing from Day reminiscent of the great Al Jarreau. "Our Colors Won’t Run (Feat. President Obama)" by Nigel George (Spoken Word Artist from Chicago, Illinois(IL))

Nigel George produces an inspirational album with "Our Colors Won't Run (Feat. President Obama)." A peaceful and patriotic message is encouraged within the beautiful and inspirational lyrics of this song. Ingenious uses of Barack Obama speeches are on the first track, called "Our Colors Won't Run (Obama For America)" utilizing specific quotes that are cleverly meshed within the lyrics. "Angel" by Cassandra Tribe (Spoken Word/Poetry Artist from Chicago, Illinois (IL))

"Angel" by Cassandra Tribe is a deep and intellectual spoken word EP that is filled with precise imagery and a tone that is tense and revealing. It is not just Cassandra's words that create the journey; it is her delivery, pacing, and tranquil voice that really rounds out the concept. She plays on silence in a way that keeps you longing for the next line and hanging on every word. This is Cassandra's third CD and the concept of this album is a stripped down work of art. You hear nothing but her voice on this one, a bold statement considering music and effects were a big part of her previous releases. There is a build as the journey unfolds when the album opens with the whispery "The Dark Flower of Hope (Part 1)," a reflection of wasted life. "Monster" deals with more irresponsibility, this time in the area of false gods. "The Dreams of Bees" brings forth tremendous power and intensity as Cassandra brings forth the most vivid of frustrations. If you enjoy rich, well performed poetry, you will enjoy "Angel."

"Singing the Great American Songbook" by Ron Kaplan (Easy Listening/Jazz Artist from California (CA))

"Singing the Great American Songbook" by jazz vocalist Ron Kaplan (for the American Songbook Preservation Society) is a live CD capturing the performance of a benefit concert given by Mr. Kaplan at The Kuumbwa Jazz Center on January 25, 2007. Kaplan is joined by the stellar musicians Marshall Otwell on the piano and Stan Poplin on bass. This release captures the sound and spirit of this live show beautifully, with each musician shining both individually and collectively. Kaplan has a gentle, swinging style of phrasing and his sidemen provide wonderful support and solos throughout. They begin the set with spirited interpretations of Duke Ellington's "Drop Me Off in Harlem" and "Solitude," with Kaplan in fine form. Otwell provides intelligent figures and swinging solos over Poplin's steady bass. Also included is a great rendition of Cole Porter's "I Get a Kick Out of You," with Kaplan's vocals dancing on top of the rhythmic piano of Otwell, anchored by the solid bass lines of Poplin. Another highlight is an enchanting version of Harold Arlen & Johnny Mercer's "Out of This World," with soaring vocals from Kaplan and fiery solos by both Otwell & Poplin. A touching interpretation of the jazz ballad "Willow Weep for Me" showcases the trio's sensitivity. The trio closes the night with a playful performance of George & Ira Gershwin's "Love Is Here to Stay," with lively vocals from Kaplan and splashy solos contributed from both Otwell and Poplin. This concert and album is a great example of timeless material performed by three extremely talented musicians; a wonderful contribution to the Great American Songbook. “Viva Mayday” by Viva Mayday (Rap Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Viva Mayday with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Viva Mayday"

"Viva Mayday" is the politically charged self-titled debut from reggae rock outfit Viva Mayday. A typical rock three piece – guitar, bass and drums – Viva Mayday rely heavily upon the upstroke to create their classic reggae sound. They also incorporate punk and classic rock elements into their music, showing their musical talent and diversity. The lead singer's vocals are uniformly in the style of traditional reggae and fused with a variety of musical styles, Viva Mayday show likeliness to Bob Marley, Dispatch, The Clash and Sublime at different points on the album. All the while, their lyrics are reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine. Viva Mayday's songs are jam-packed with socially aware, politically charged lyrics that exploit the bands disgruntledness, for the most part, with American foreign policy. "Viva Mayday" is also well-produced, sure to keep both the music and lyrics polished and audible. "Fidel" opens with an incredible Hendrix-style guitar solo as they sing about "the war machine" and "propane democracy." "Missionaries" reflects the "give peace a chance" mentality of the entire album with a Marley-esque vocal, suggesting that even the people that mean perfectly well are struggling to survive abroad. "1963 Motorcade" is a song about the assassination of JFK and conspiracy theories against the government. "Viva Mayday" is certainly opinionated and controversial. If you enjoy what Rage Against the Machine offers lyrically and punk-infused reggae rock, you should give this album a listen.

“Allergic to Gravity” by Thomas Hutchings (Electronica Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

"Allergic to Gravity" is a unique jazz-tronica album from New York City saxophonist/electronic music composer Thomas Hutchings. This album is all about making original, good music. Hutchings' songs originate with the synthesizer, programmed beats, and various electronica elements, forming the base for all the tracks. Then he dubs live instruments, including percussion, creative guitar, funky bass, sax, flute, clarinet, and trumpet over it to complete the arrangement. Some tracks are jazz-heavy, others are electronica-heavy, and still others breech the trip-hop and funk genres. All of the arrangements are outstanding, with catchy hooks, danceable beats, and the live instruments perfectly in sync with the programmed elements. "Allergic to Gravity" is well-produced, and the louder you play it, the better. "Shizznizzle" has a great arrangement with a quick flute line throughout, a funky bass line, hot beats programming, and an overall consistency throughout. "Everybody Say Ahhhhh" is an electronica-heavy track with extreme danceability and light horns in the background, and features a great trumpet solo against the beats. Overall, "Allergic to Gravity" is an original album that fuses two distinct genres through a great electronic base and excellent jazz accompaniments. Fans of either of these genres should see what jazz-tronica is all about.

Both members of It's Only Us deliver great, original, and well-timed hip-hop flows with intelligent and humorous socially-conscious lyrics. The songs feature hot head-bobbing beats, catchy hooks, and great musical diversity throughout. "Blue Circle" by Dave Foster (Pop Artist from New York City, New York(NY))

RadioIndy is pleased to present Dave Foster with a GrIndie award for their CD "Blue Circle"

Getting inside the music of "Blue Circle" by Dave Foster is likened to a journey to the center of the Earth, radically different yet refreshingly welcoming, as a traveler to a foreign land comes across a landmark that has beckoned for years. This songwriter reminded us of greats like John Lennon and even Dave Matthews; thought-provoking and versatile lyrically, along with a masterful use of modern beats, funky throw-backs, and synthesized vocals. We especially enjoyed "Falling To Pieces", which combines all of the aforementioned elements of genius songwriting, production, and performance. Way far out front vocals and bitter raw emotion drive us to pick our favorite, "All You Gave To Me", for it's contemporary bass-line and hip lyrical makeup.
